Our rent had lapsed months ago. I’d been living at the hospital with her, through every test and treatment. Her dad was already gone. My job said they “understood,” but the calls stopped two weeks ago. I knew what that meant.
Still, I smiled for her. Brushed her hair back. Let her pick out a balloon from the gift shop, even though we couldn’t afford it.
