The late March sky above Green Meadows Cemetery in Rivne hung heavy and gray, shrouding the mourners in a somber veil as they gathered to say goodbye to six-year-old Sofia Kovalenko. A small white coffin, topped with a modest bouquet of wildflowers, sat at the center of it all, drawing everyone’s focus like the heart of the universe.
Suddenly, the silence was broken by the sound of paws pounding against the earth. A German Shepherd named Dakota burst through the crowd, ignoring the desperate commands of her handler. With unshakable determination, she charged toward the coffin and, with a powerful leap, landed directly on top of it. Her body tensed, as though she were shielding something beneath her, and her eyes blazed with fierce resolve.
“Get the dog out of here!” someone shouted, but Dakota bared her teeth and refused to move—as if guarding a secret no one could yet understand.
Yaroslav, pushing all doubt aside, demanded that the coffin be opened.
As the lid of the coffin was slowly lifted, the entire cemetery fell silent—no one could look away from whatever it was Dakota had so desperately been protecting…
